Behind The Scenes At The “Novelties And Things” Brainstorming Session.

November 17, 2006 by Mary & Kimberly

Noveltiesandthings_1

Novelties and Things…well, hmmm. I don’t know…it just sounds sort of vague, you know that I mean guys? What else have you got?

Noveltiesandstuff_1

Novelties and Stuff? That sounds too…too casual. Yeah, that’s the right word. Causal.

Noveltiesandjunk_1

Novelties and Junk? That’s even worse than "stuff." That almost sounds like it’s, you know….a bunch of worthless objects.

What’s that? I’m not going to like the next idea then? Nah, come on! Let’s give it a shot….go ahead and show me the next concept.

Otherworthlessobjects_1

Oh.

Well, that’s it…we’re just going to have to stick with the first title. "Novelties and Things!" It sounds sort of fun….people like novelties. And…things.

Okay, what’s the first item in the booklet?

Whiskcover

A whisk cover, eh? Now would this be a novelty or a thing? I’m thinking it’s a…novelty? Is that right? What’s the next one?

Babybottlecover

Um…that looks like another novelty? Let’s go with "novelty" for this one.

Next!

Slackset

What the…?

This is in the booklet? Seriously?

Okay, I wasn’t so sure about the first two but this? This is definitely a "thing."

Ok let me get this straight. Most of the time, you guys leave the pictures up till we start whining. This week, you put up a new one every 15 minutes…what exactly is the point here?

You’d think they’d rest on their laurels with having a book published. ;-)

Then again, I love the new stuff, especially the things.

BTW, is that a Princess Leia wig the snowman is wearing?

I’m still trying to figure out what the patch of orange is doing on the astroturf? Is there some political or football related message here?

I am so disappointed in this pattern book. An AMPERSAND? For crying out loud, clearly this book cries out for an “N” in it’s place!

Loving that positive energy! Not enough posts? Whine. Too many posts? Whine. What a super plan!

  6. on November 18, 2006 at 8:37 am barb

Well gee Goldilocks, I wouldn’t exactly call it a plan..it was a reaction. A response. A review, if you will. But..a PLAN? Not. : )

Well, Barb, the thing is that you missed the period for public comment, which was obviously during the primary posting of “Never Let It Be Said That We Can’t Take A Hint,” in which this poststravaganza was announced (in honor of the book coming out).

Were you not paying attention, young lady?

And let me just add, to the webmasters, that the only reason I haven’t been posting comments about how funny these all are is that they are so amazing that they truly defy comment. They speak for themselves, to the preclusion of comments. The level and quality of THINGS is just astounding. Ahem.

  8. on November 18, 2006 at 9:57 am Nancy

“…they truly defy comment.” Exactly, Jessamyn. You really couldn’t make up something like the slack set as a joke. And the only possible reaction is slackjawed amazement. (and possibly a stiff drink)

    Great stuff. Er, things.

I notice that the cover states ‘book number 232′ — does that mean that they actually created 231 similar books prior to this one? I can only think that they ran out ideas for anything remotely useful back around book number 50. Could that slack set be any LESS figure flattering? Eek!

Oh i love that slack set–if only i had time to whip one up for next weekend for the comapny christmas party—i could wear my “I dress like this just to bother you” button!

What is the point of a baby bottle cover? Did they spill back then?

  12. on November 20, 2006 at 7:30 am Susan

Wouldn’t it be a hoot to whip up a bunch of whisk broom covers as Christmas gifts? Imagine the joy watching the perplexed looks of friends and family as they unwrap this jewel of a gift, scratching their heads, wondering what the heck this wierd crocheted thing is?!

  13. on November 20, 2006 at 9:16 am Marcia

About that orange patch on the rug? I think they just ran out of dark green.

I thought that was the flag of an emerging third-world nation. Can’t figure out which one, though. Obviously in a cold climate, made with Aunt Lydia’s heavy rug yarn and all. With national colors of moss, seafoam and tangerine. Odd, the citizenry seems to show respect to their leader by turning their backs to him and fluttering their eyelashes.

Did anyone notice that the slack set is made with Aunt Lydia’s rug yarn? Just thinking about camel toe and rug burn in the same sentence makes me cringe.

  16. on November 20, 2006 at 2:49 pm OzoneGirl

What?! No doohickeys? That whisk cover definitely looks more like a doohickey than a novelty to me. Then again, “doohickey” is kind of a technical term and I’m not sure that “Novelties and Doohickeys” would be able to fit on the cover. The word “doohickey” is too long and would probably cover up the Princess Leia snowperson.

  17. on November 21, 2006 at 7:26 am mags

Wow, my mom actually has that snowman on the cover. I think my aunt must have made it, she’s the crocheter in the family. That snowman still comes out every christmas season.

That has got to be the most useless crochet pattern book in existence. An ugly rug, a hideous pantsuit that makes your hips look gigantic, and a random assortment of dolls and object covers. How, exactly, does one get a pattern book published? Because I’m pretty sure I could come up with something better than this one, and I can barely crochet.

I actually had a similar slack set when I was in Jr. High.

I actually have this book! I got a bunch of stuff like this from my grandma. She actually made a bunch of it back in the day! LOL
